And you will never let your patients down.That was the life that Mary Byrne led. She was a nurse for fifty plus years and she was really good at it. After graduating from Belmont High School in 1949 she went to Saint Elizabeth's Hospital School of Nursing in Brighton and became a registered nurse.Her career began at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge before she took time off to raise her family. She went back to nursing at Reservoir Nursing Home in Waltham and at Emerson Nursing Home in Watertown. She was also the resident family and neighborhood caregiver.Mrs. Mary F. (Daly) Byrne, of Waltham, died Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Forge Hill Senior Living in Franklin following a period of declining health. She was 85.Mary was born in Boston on August 30, 1931, a daughter of the late James and Bridget (Shanahan) Daly, and had been a lifelong Belmont resident before her marriage in 1953 to Brighton native Edward L. Byrne. The couple lived in Watertown for a time before moving to Waltham fifty-six years ago.Mary and Ed enjoyed twenty-five years together before Ed's death on August 9, 1978.She leaves her children, James "Jay" Byrne and his wife, Linda, of Sharon, Cynthia A. Byrne of Waltham, and Diane Rohr and her husband, James, of Hudson; her grandchildren, Christine Ferreira, Stephanie Campbell, Kevin Byrne, Michael Rohr and Megan Sandman; her sisters, Catherine Riley of Newton and Margaret Dahill of Concord; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Mary was also a sister of the late Eleanor Daly.Family and friends will honor and remember Mary's life by gathering to visit at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham where her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452 or to the Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA 02445.Obituary and photo courtesy of Joyce Funeral Home Get free real-time new...

She was 100.Pauline was born in Waltham on May 5, 1916, a daughter of the late George and Marie (Roach) Manning. After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Waltham she went to work in the advertising department at The Boston Globe, a job she would hold for over 25 years. It was through the Globe that she was able to earn a one year business degree from Harvard University.She loved working at the newspaper where she considered her coworkers her friends. From an article written in 2016 Pauline said 'I had loads of girlfriends. They'd say, 'Tonight we're going to a club,' and I'd say, 'Well, why would I go home? I'm already dressed up.'" In her spare time she enjoyed traveling, going out to dinner and the theater. Never having children of her own she was especially close with her nieces and nephews, never missing a birthday or special occasion. She was also a devout Catholic and in later years would always make it a point to watch daily Mass on television.She was the sister of the late George E., Henry F. and Donald J. Manning and Shirley A. Archibald E. "Archie," Carter, of Waltham, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 89.Archie was born in Waltham on December 11, 1927 to the late Archibald and Mary (Garnier) Carter. He was a graduate of Waltham Vocational High School and in 1946 joined the United States Army.Raised in Wayland, Archie made his way to Waltham after his marriage to the late Mary D. (Orifice) Carter in 1948 where the newlywed couple started a family and became lifelong residents.Archie opened AE Carter Plumbing & Heating, Inc. in Waltham in 1956, a business Archie took great pride in and one that his son Gary continues to manage to the present day.A true outdoorsman, Archie found a lot of peace and happiness in fishing and boating. Green Harbor in Marshfield was one of his go-to destinations with family and friends. A dedicated gardener, Archie used his green thumb to grow an impressive home garden.Loyal to his Boston sports teams, Archie was a big fan of the Celtics and enjoyed sitting back to watch the games.Archie leaves his children, Michele A. Lorette and Gary E. Carter and his wife, Julie, all of Waltham; his grandchildren, Stacey Gaudet, Denise Lorette and Alex, Carolyn and Andrew Carter; eight great-grandchildren; his siblings, Frances Cahill, of Texas, and Rita Hubbard, of Salem; his longtime companion, Theresa Maloney and several nieces and nephews.He was also the father-in-law of the late Wayne Lorette and a brother of the late Kathleen Hicks and Arthur Carter.Family and friends will honor and remember Archie's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, February 26th from 3 to 7 p.m. and again on Monday morning when his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.Obituary and photo courtesy of Joyce Funeral Home Get free real-time news alerts from the Waltham Patch.
